The Shanghai Woolies play “hot music,” 1920’s and 30’s jazz and pop of Chicago and New York City. The eight-piece ensemble, created by Pink Martini trumpeter Gavin Bondy, swims in the romance of Louis Armstrong, the mystery of Duke Ellington, the whimsy of Paul Whiteman, and the swing of Benny Goodman. They use a respectful, slightly unorthodox approach, inspired by the colorful liberation of the original.
Solo Mandolin X2 – Evan Marshall and Brian Oberlin
Two solo mandolinists, each performing their unique solo sets that include Classical, Bluegrass, Swing, Jazz, Western Swing, and original music. Evan, from Los Angeles, is the world’s premier solo mandolinist in the Duo-style technique that includes his crowd-surfing arrangement of the William Tell Overture for solo mandolin. Brian Oberlin, from Portland, will perform music from his latest solo albums. Mandolin Troubadour features original material and celebrates his top ten finish at the 2013 Telluride Troubadour Contest. Capriccio Fantastico is Brian’s venture into the world of Italian classical solo mandolin. The virtuosic music comes from Italy’s great mandolin composers of the late 1800s and a few arrangements from Brian. The two will certainly join forces and perform beautiful duets as well as foot-stomping, blazing fast arrangements of their personal best, and favorite music. www.solomandolin.com www.mandoberlin.com
